| I'll go first! Inspired by Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone", P.F. Sloan wrote "Eve Of Destruction." Steve Barri put music to it and Barry McGuire recorded a rough vocal of the song, accompanying himself on guitar and with the Grass Roots doing back-up. An assistant for Jay Lasker, vice president of Dunhill Records, gave the demo to KFWB, which immediately started playing it. KFWB even made it a pick hit of the week. McGuire never got to do a more formal recording of the song---Dunhill wound up releasing the rough version and it went to number one! |

I know of no Barry McGuire song like that. Are you referring to the 2005 "Lost In Saigon" CD by Hanoi LeRoi? He is LeRoi Jones, who was a singer/dancer who toured with the Tubes, 1974-77. Flash, if you're going to ask difficult questions, then I protest!
Remember Sonny Bono's 1965 hit, "Laugh At Me"? He wrote it, recorded it, and released it within 72 hours after being refused entrance to an Italian restaurant in Hollywood because the maƮtre d' didn't like Sonny's shaggy animal-print vest. Kind of a self-serving protest song, but it reached #10 on the chart. |

Thomps, thanks! I've often wondered why the 45 version and the different-take vocal on the album version had that one-word difference:
"This world's got a lot of space
and if they don't like my face
It ain't me that's going anywhere" (45 version)
---or---
It ain't me that's going anyplace" (LP version)
Did Sonny flub the line in the rush to get the single out? While "anyplace" rhymes with "space" and "face," I always liked the "anywhere" version better. |

Huh!!! I never noticed that before! I have Sonny's album, not the single. I liked the scratchboard cover. Art students know what that is. You know it's from the mid-1960s when you hear "Pammie's On A Bummer" and "My Best Friend's Girl Is Out Of Sight." Apparently he was in such a hurry to get "Laugh At Me" out, he didn't concern himself with silly things such as rhymes, then did a new version later for the LP. In 1999, Rhino reissued the "Inner Views" album with several extra tracks plus the 45 version of "Laugh At Me." |

Not to derail the thread, but I've got to ask another Sonny Bono question: what was the deal with the word "quetzal" in several of his song titles?
"Baby Don't Go"/ "Walkin' The Quetzal" (Reprise 0309, 0392)
"The Revolution Kind" / "Georgia And John Quetzal" (Atco 6386)
"Midnight Surf" / "Ride The Wild Quetzal" (Vee-Jay 710)
Any idea? |

A quetzal is a South American bird. Supposedly Sonny used the obscure word in three of his B-side titles to make the songs less likely to be plagiarized by other artists. He got the idea from Phil Spector. Somehow I don't think anyone would have been likely to steal too many Sonny Bono songs! |

Quetzal has two definitions:
| Quote: | quetzal
n 1: the basic unit of money in Guatemala; equal to 100 centavos 2: large trogon of Central and South America having
golden-green and scarlet plumage [syn: quetzal bird]
|
However, I guess it's easier to "Walk the bird" than walk the money.

I think the LP release of Sonny's restaurant protest song is the take-out version! _________________

"Laugh At Me" appeared on "The Wondrous World Of Sonny & Cher" in 1966. Was that version the earlier 45 or was it the one that would be on Sonny's solo album? Come on, one of you schmucks must have that album! |

I'm not a "schmuck," so I can't answer.
Really.
Nope. Won't answer it.
Yah. Shure.
I first heard the "anyplace" version when I bought the stereo album The Best Of Sonny & Cher (Atco 219) in 1967, after they'd appeared on an episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. It was the first and last album of theirs that I bought.
The promo copy I have of a 1975 repackaging of Atco and Reprise hits, The Beat Goes On (Atco 11000) also has the "anyplace" album version in stereo.
My guess is that if the single was a major rush job, they didn't have time to do a stereo mix (as was the case with Three Dog Night's "Shambala.") The single would have been in mono, anyway. The opportunity to capitalize on the restaurant incident while the topic was still hot likely trumped any immediate retake opportunity. Once the mono single was out, perhaps Sonny wanted the "proper" lyrics on the album which followed. |
